Get up, father,
Autumn is upon us,
time for the sowing,
the birds
are full of expectation.
Green rain falls
in the fields
and ploughs
tear up the earth.
Get up, father,
leave your garden of sorrow,
go through the fields
to plant the wheat
of life.

Aixeca-te, pare,
que ja és tardor,
és temps de sembra,
els pardals
són plens d'esperança
Sobre els
camps
baixen pluges verdes
i els arados
obrin la terra.
Aixeca-te,
pare,
deixa el teu jardí de pena,
vés pels camps
a sembrar el forment
de la vida.

Commentary |
«With this poem I´d like to bring my father to life
who died when I was two months old ”, said Canu.He was born
in Ocier, an inland city on the island of Sardinia, and spoke his
native tongue Sarda, integrating into the culture that adopted him
- the Catalan Alguer culture. He attended the local Pasqual Scanu
School in order to develop a better understanding of the Catalan
language spoken in Alguer, and thereafter became a member of the
Cultural Foundation. In 1990 he began using Algueres Catalan for
poetic expressión. He then met teacher Giulia Lanciani from
the University of Sapienza in Rome who had translated to Italian
the poetic works of Salvador Espriu. This meeting proved to be significant
for him in his poetic development.
